The Kwele occupy a great forest region on the borders of Gabon, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Each Kwele mask is an original work of art, individually hand carved, no two are exactly alike which adds to the value of each piece.
The Kwele mask often has a whitened heart-shaped face, a triangular nose, coffee-bean eyes and small or non-existent mouth (the mouth being very close to the chin).
Kwele mask are not worn in ceremonies and are instead shown to the spectators. Their function was to warm up the village atmosphere in order to activate the beneficial forces. The masks represent the spirits of the forest.
The faces are usually painted in white kaolin earth, a pigment associated with light, peace, tranquility and clarity, the essential factors in the fight against evil. This great piece would be a wonderful addition to your home and collection.
