The Sick Man Statue is a wooden sculpture from the Pende culture of the Congo. It depicts a naked, emaciated man. His twisted face is gaunt and his eyes are closed.
His arms are folded across his chest and his legs are bent. The statue is carved in a realistic style, with details.
It is often interpreted as a representation of a sick or dying man. These statues were used by the shaman to heal the sick and relieve their suffering by trapping the disease inside them.
This statuette has never been used in any ritual.
