Description
African Kongo Bakongo Yombe mask 12*9″ 1,9 lbs, for your collection or your wall and interior decoration (Blmk10014)
Originating from Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly known as Bakongo), and their neighbors, the Yombe people live in the Atlantic coast of West Congo. This strong-walled mask, carved in hard brown wood is a beautiful reliquary of the Kongo Empire. Originally dyed black with pigments.
Its traditionally glazed eyes with the geometrically inclined lancet-formed eyes and transverse outlining is the essence of the spirituality of the Kongo people. These masks were worn by the Nganga Diphomba (ritual specialist or diviner) of Kongo. Hanged in villages as a detector of evil spirits and for spiritual purification purposes, this beautifully mystic mask is the epitome of Kongo magic. Collectors will definitely love this piece.
