Description
Fang Bieri African statuette 23*5″ 3,1 lbs, for your collection or home decoration. (Blst13520)
This hand-carved statuette of the Fang ethnic group of Gabon, made out of wood and brass is a fine relic that points to the traditions of Fang people ages ago.
Carved with simplicity and adorned with pearls, this Bieri (meaning ancestor) sculpture exhibits a great deal of sophistication, with fine edges that suggest attention to detail.
The Fang statuettes served for therapeutic and initiation rituals, with this particular statuette being used to protect and traditionally guard the bones of Fang ancestors since as a migratory group, the Fang clansmen carried ancestral bones with them in their travels. This wooden figure is a piece of art that is telling of the indigenous practices of the then Fangs.
