Description

African Songye wooden shield 15″ 1,8 lbs for your collection or your wall decoration (blsh1115)

These handmade shields by the Songye tribe of Congo depict pure African tradition and ancestry tracing back to generations. Made out of wood and dyed with pigments, these shields are decorated with geometrical motifs, considered as a blazon so that the enemy could recognize the clan or the tribe the warrior belonged to during battle.

It was one of the finest weaponries used by tribesmen, only phasing out and being used solely for ceremonial purposes when they had little to no resistance against western firearms. With a harmonious form, this shield has a specific beauty with the background designed with characteristic striations and a central “Kifwebe” mask.
With intricate details, these are pieces of abstract art from old African tribes which connect one to their African ancestry.
